Kororinpa: Marble Mania (Wii)

Buy Now Release Date: 03/20/2007 ESRB Rating: Everyone Genre: Action Publisher: Konami Developer: Hudson OVERVIEW NEWS PREVIEWS REVIEWS FEATURES IMAGES VIDEOS FILES CHEATS The 1UP Network features reviews from our panel of experts, including our editors at Electronic Gaming Monthly. We rate games on a scale of A+ through F. Anything we score in the A+ through A- range is considered excellent, B+ through B- is good, C+ through C- is average, D+ through D- is bad, and F is terrible. Here are our Kororinpa Wii reviews from editors and members. ReviewsThis one's on a roll. By Jenn Frank 03/27/2007 > Reviewer's Blog > Review Crew Profile With its myriad candy-land levels and abrasively twee melodies, Kororinpa: Marble Mania comes wrapped in a deceptively unassuming package. While the beginning stages start out as simple, straightforward affairs, Marble Mania's charm belies its fierce challenge curve. But right off the bat, it's clear that this is the sort of game for which the Wii is truly intended: It's a game everyone and his mother can enjoy, and it makes great use of the Wii Remote and hardware. You simply navigate a marble through each 3D puzzle, tilting your Wii Remote to move the board and collect all the gems en route to the exit. It sounds easy, and it even looks easy, but Marble Mania has teeth. It often requires a steady hand and quick reflexes, as well as on-the-spot puzzle-solving skills. The most fulfilling puzzles involve quickly rotating the game board onto its side so that walls become floors. It's a simple game mechanic that makes incredibly full use of the Wii Remote's range of motion. In fact, the controls are responsive and tight without ever becoming too frustratingly sensitive. Each unlockable marble has its own weight and physics. The "Panda" marble, for instance, is kid-friendly (and adorable) -- but it's also just right for gamers who want their marbling to be a little more relaxing. But if your well-honed marble skills demand some white-knuckled challenge, you can opt instead to play with a different, more difficult unlockable marble. Some marbles are lightweight, quick, and darting; others are heavy, slow, and unwieldy. Unfortunately, you'll soon find most of these unlockables, mostly because the game itself is much too short. While some games compensate for short single-player campaigns with high-octane, addictive multiplayer, Marble Mania's two-player mode is, unfortunately, pretty lame. The splitscreen competition is uninventive: Each marble mundanely races against the other marble's "ghost" toward the goal. And you can't interact with the adversary's ghost in any way; it's just there for competitive pressure. So multiplayer seems sort of a wasted opportunity; here we'd hoped to, you know, duke it out for gems or bump our opponent screaming over a ledge. No such luck. Still, simply racing against the ghost did seem to amp the game up just enough to qualify as truly tense. And as with some of Hudson's other recent Wii games, the second player can use the Nunchuk in lieu of a second Wii Remote, which is strange but sort of nice -- if you don't mind being physically tethered to your opponent.Marble Mania's other big issue: viewing-perspective glitches. In a game like this, being able to see into every nook and cranny is imperative -- often, the only thing to save you from falling off into the abyss and respawning again at the start line is the ability to aim your marble toward the safe, protective little valley just around the next bend. And if you can't see that nook until you're already falling off the game board, the loss feels sort of cheap. But it's easy to concede Marble Mania this one piddling glitch. The game's greatest fault, really, is that it's over too soon. Missed opportunities and some perspective oddities aside, Kororinpa: Marble Mania is a solid, charming puzzler. Author: Dan , 06/25/2007 Score: B- Marble Mania is a modern re-imaging of old hand-held "labyrinth" marble games. However, instead of tilting a board to have a marble navigate a maze, the player tilts the Wii controller, leaning the game's entire 3-D environment in order to navigate various obstacle courses. For example, when you tilt the controller forward, the course tilts that direction, and what was previously a level surface becomes an incline that the ball rolls down until it either hits an obstacle or the controller is tilted a different direction. This mechanic is quite responsive, and works surprisingly well, though the experience is short-lived. There are forty-five normal levels, as well as a mirror mode for each of those, and a handful of special courses. This probably sounds like a lot, but each course will only take the average gamer a few minutes. With a bit of confidence and a steady hand, only the last dozen or so levels should provide a significant challenge. Despite this, the mechanic remains fun, and besting earlier times quickly becomes an entertaining task. There are a number of unlockable levels and marbles, but most are easily obtained. While there are a few interesting marbles, they clearly fall into a few specific types without a lot of variation in those sets. Early on, the slow marbles are the best choice for simply completing the courses, while the fast and heavy ones are more dangerous, but reward the skilled player with a better time. The multiplayer provides a tiny bit of longevity to the experience, but a lack of modes aside from just racing to the goal time-attack style means that the boost is a minor one. Adding collision to the multiplayer could have really improved the game, and even lent some new life to marble variety (with heavier ones more easily bumping off opponents). Unfortunately, this is just not so. Your opponent is only represented as a "ghost," so you can track your compared progress. Marble Mania is one of the best uses of the Wii's unique controller I've experienced. It offers some very fun gameplay, but only for a few hours. If its content lasted longer, or gained some competitive longevity through a more robust multiplayer, I would gladly give it a higher score. Still, even if it easily experienced as a rental, it is darn good while it lasts. Mania Manic Author: Janice , 06/22/2007 Score: B- I loved the kororinpa's that you unlocked in this game. You have to find a green gem on each level to unlock them all. The added challenge was fun. If you're looking for a game to buy for your new Wii that teaches you about controlling your remote, buy this one. I guarantee you will go from novice to advanced by the time you beat the game. You get a variety of marbles that unlock a you beat levels, allowing you to change up the pace. And the multi-player option was fun, though it could have been a little more challenging. We actually found that you could knock the other player back to the beginning if you rammed into their ball on your screen. Pros; A great companion game for the Wii system. Cons; A little too much plane clipping, but you can get around it. Overall, this is a great game for any age. I'd buy it for my little bro. Decent Showing of Wii Functionality Author: Dan , 06/06/2007 Score: B- Marble Mania is a current remake of old "labrynth" style hand held marble games. However, instead of tilting a board to have a marble navigate a maze, the player tilts the Wii controller in order to navigate a three-dimensional obstacle course while collecting orange crystals. This mechanic is quite responsive, and works surprisingly well, though the experience is short-lived. There are forty-five normal levels, as well as a mirror mode for each of those, and a handful of special courses. This probably sounds like a lot, but the average time for completing a course on my play-through was only a few minutes. Once I developed a bit more confidence in navigating narrow passages and a steadier hand, only the last dozen or so levels provided a significant challenge. Despite this though, the mechanic remains fun, and besting earlier times quickly becomes an entertaining task. There are a number of unlockable levels and marbles, but most are easily obtained, and while there are a few interesting marbles, they clearly fall into a few specific types without a lot of variation in those sets. You will probably find a favorite marble in your first playthrough, and stick with it for most of your subsequent play sessions. It offers some very fun gameplay for a good few hours. If its content lasted longer, or gained some competitive longevity through a more robust multiplayer, I would gladly give it a higher score. Still, even if it easily experienced as a rental, it is darn good while it lasts. The Slappy's Kororinpa: Marble Mania Review Author: * , 04/24/2007 Score: B- Kororinpa: Marble Mania is perhaps the perfect rental game: it's easy to grasp, it's entertaining in it's own right and it lasts you a day or two. It's more Monkey Ball than Marble Madness in that you move the surroundings versus the ball itself. Which is a brilliant use of the Wii remote; I was holding it gently with both hands, subtly moving and twisting to get my ball to the prerequisite crystals and then to the goal. It reads your motions extremely well, making it feel as if you're rolling over curves or twisting the remote to go vertical. The remote sound effects are rumbles are such nice touches that they actually bare mentioning here. In general, I liked the feel of this game; it was lightly paced and not particularly challenging. Like I said, I breezed through it's entirety in a few hours. Even the secret level opening green crystals aren't too tough to nab if you use a little ingenuity. And later levels have checkpoints so that you aren't repeating things over and over again. There's a time limit you can try to beat, but the game's pace is otherwise leisurely; no lives, no ways to lose. Yet it's fun for...*gasp!* the whole family. The only real knocks I have are that the music is vanilla and that the developer didn't bother to optimize the game for progressive scan. I wouldn't recommend buying this game; even with the ability to reverse the levels, there's not much meat on these bones. The variety of marbles is cool, but nothing that would make you repeat levels using different ones. But that's not to say I didn't have a good time with this game; sometimes we need a game that's a little more casual and loose. But again, I don't think it's worth $40, either. Either way, even without legs; I'd still recommend this little bugger. Like I said, perfect rental. Although, if I saw this in a bargain bin for say, ten bones; it'd be worth it.
