Rather than pick teams, the two Warlords, Matthew Davies and Paul Cockram, decided to base the sides on fluff.Imperial Forces:Warlord Paul Cockram, Witch HuntersMaddy Councill, Old Space Marines CodexPaul nettle, New Space Marines CodexAnti-Imperial AllianceWarlord Matthew Davies, EldarJames Funnell, TauSean Councill, Dark EldarThe game was fought on a 12 foot by 4 foot table, with 5 objectives. One of the objectives, Landing Stage XI, was worth 3 Objectives, and was captured by the side with the most troops on it. The sides prepare for warThe two objectives contested by Maddy and Matthew was a cat and mouse fight, as Maddy captured them early on, and the Eldar struggled to knock out her Dreadnoughts. Paul Cockram’s Battle Sisters lent support, but on the final turn Matthew’s Eldar Jet Bikes glided in to contest them, and in the end no-one captured them. On the other flank Paul Nettle’s Space Marines advanced against two thirds of Sean’s Dark Eldar – Sean had sent the rest to contest the landing stage. Despite problems with the Dark Eldar witches, Paul had captured both objectives on the final Imperial turn, having killed off the elements of Tau sent to assist the Dark Eldar. On the final Dark Eldar turn, Sean could have contested both objectives simply by moving up to them. However, true to their fluff, the Dark Eldar attacked the Space Marines and an epic melee broke out around both objectives. Sean’s dice really let him down when it really mattered, and despite everything the Space Marines won both objectives. With two objectives won by the Imperial forces, and with two objectives contested, the three objectives that could be won for the Landing platform were vital. The Tau and Witch Hunters were the two opposing forces selected to capture the Landing platform. The Witch Hunters were first onto and around the platform, using devastating earth-moving weapons that physically shifted the Landing Stage closer to their table edge. The Tau spent several turns drifting in and out of cover, sweeping Paul Cockram’s Battle Sisters and their Rhinos with fire. Still the battle sisters endured behind whatever cover they could find. The turning point came when Sean’s witches and Archon attacked the platform. They devastated the Imperial forces and tied them in an ever-lasting combat; preventing them from replacing their dead comrades on the Platform; and whilst this was going on, Eldar and Tau forces landed on the Platform, unopposed. After four turns the only forces on the Platform were from the anti-Imperial alliance; and they scored the three objectives, and won the game! The platform on Turn 3 The Platform on Turn 4The victorious Campaign Winner, Matthew, flanked by his team mates: Thanks to Sean Councill, who took all the pictures: Below are the pictures taken during the final:Slideshow Posted in W40K No Comments » 2008-40k-campaign-final-battle November 8, 2008 Slideshow Posted in Gallery, W40K 1 Comment » March 1943 – Somewhere in Tunisia October 31, 2008 A 600 Point Flames of War Ladder BattleIn March 1943 the 5th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment, received 5 new Officers and 150 new Other Ranks as replacements. It conducted a number of training exercises with the British 6th Armoured Division to ‘bed-in’ their new recruits and prepare for the assault on the Fondouk Gap.Scenario – “The Cauldron”Attacker – James Funnell, US Armored RiflesHQ with 37mm Anti-tank GunArmored Rifle Platoon with 2 SquadsSelf-Propelled Anti-tank Platoon – 2 x M10Assault Gun Platoon – 2 x M8 ScottDefender – Paul Nettle, British 1st Army RiflesHQ – ‘B’ Company 5th HantsRifle Platoon with 3 Squads and a PIAT – 5th HantsCarrier Patrol – 3 x UC with 3 x 0.5” MG – 5th HantsHeavy Armoured Troop – 3 x Sherman MkIII – 16/5th LancersBecause the Attacker and Defender used Reserve rules, the British started by defending two objectives with a single Rifle platoon! This meant a very long, thin deployment with little supporting fire. The Americans deployed their Armored Rifle Platoon and the 37mm Gun with the 2IC.The Americans moved up to the British Rifle pits and opened a fusillade of fire, which temporarily pinned the Rifles. However, they unpinned in time for the dismounted assault, and despite a torrent of 37mm shells, 0.5” MG and LMG fire, not to mention Bazooka and rifle fire, the Rifles stayed unpinned and poured a hail of fire into the American assault, stopping it dead in its tracks. The British continued pouring fire into the dismounted Americans, who were now stranded in the open, and things improved for the British when the 16/5th Lancers showed up, opening up on the US half-tracks. The US Armoured Rifle platoon, along with the US CinC, bugged out.The Americans responded by bringing on their two M10 tank-destroyers, who initially had the worst of the exchange with the Shermans. However, the Shermans were surprised to see their shells bouncing off the M10s, and after losing a Sherman they too bugged out, leaving the American armour (the US Assault guns showed up as well) master of the battlefield. In a desperate last fling the 5th Bn Carrier Platoon tried to advance to get around the flank of the US Armour, but was itself destroyed. As the US armour all had 0.5” MGs, there was no point in the isolated Rifle Platoon trying to assault the US tanks, and the Exercise Umpires called “Endex”. It was a US victory!
